Estate planning for the life you actually built.

Your estate plan should reflect your real life — not a default version of family, relationships, success, or legacy.

At Haven Legal Studio, we help Californians create thoughtful plans for the people, animals, work, property, and causes that matter most to them.

Whether that means protecting an unmarried partner, making sure your pets are cared for, choosing trusted friends instead of relatives, preserving what you’ve built, or deciding exactly where your money should ultimately go, your plan starts with one question:

What matters most to you?

This is about more than what happens when you die.

A good estate plan also answers what happens while you’re still here if you become unable to make decisions for yourself.

Who can manage your finances?

Who can speak for you medically?

Who can access what they need?

Who takes care of your animals?

Who keeps your business or household running?

And if you die, who should receive what you’ve built — and who absolutely should not?

Estate planning gives those decisions legal structure before someone else has to make them in a crisis.

Planning beyond the default

California law comes with its own set of default rules.

Those defaults may work perfectly well for some people.

For many Haven clients, they don’t.

You may be unmarried.

You may not have children.

The people closest to you may not be your legal relatives.

Your animals may be central to your life.

You may own a business, have significant investments, support charitable causes, or simply have very specific ideas about who should be involved if something happens to you.

Without intentional planning, the law may give authority or property to people you would never have chosen.

Haven exists to make sure the plan reflects your choices instead.

Your plan may include

Depending on your circumstances, your estate plan may include:

Revocable Living Trust
To hold and manage assets during your lifetime, provide continuity during incapacity, and direct distribution after death while helping properly funded assets avoid probate.

Pour-Over Will
A backup to your trust and, where applicable, a place to nominate guardians for minor children.

Durable Power of Attorney
To name the person you trust to handle financial and legal matters if you cannot.

Advance Health Care Directive
To choose who can make health-care decisions for you and document your wishes.

Pet Planning
To identify caregivers, provide funds for your animals, and create an enforceable plan for their care.

Trust Funding and Deeds
Because signing a trust is only part of the job. Assets must be coordinated with the plan so it actually works.

Beneficiary and Asset Coordination
To identify accounts and designations that operate outside the trust and make sure they do not accidentally undermine the plan.

Your attorney will recommend the structure that fits your actual situation. You do not need to figure out which documents you need before you meet with us.

Especially important when your life doesn’t fit neatly into a box

Estate planning can be particularly important if you:

  • are unmarried or have a long-term partner
  • are childfree
  • rely on chosen family or close friends
  • have pets you want specifically protected
  • have strained or distant family relationships
  • want to leave assets to charities or causes
  • own a business or creative work
  • have beneficiaries who may need additional protection
  • own California real estate
  • want control over how and when someone inherits
  • simply do not want California’s default rules making deeply personal decisions for you

You do not need an unusual or complicated life to need an estate plan.

You just need a life you care about protecting.

The Haven approach

We do not start by handing you a stack of documents.

We start by understanding:

Who matters to you?
What have you built?
What would you want to happen if you could not speak for yourself?
Who should be protected?
What should your money ultimately be for?

Then we build the legal plan around those answers.

The goal is not simply to leave you with signed paperwork.

It is to leave you with a plan you understand, that reflects your decisions, and that has actually been implemented.

What happens next

01 — Strategy Session
We learn about your life, priorities, assets, and concerns and determine whether Haven is the right fit.

02 — Design Your Plan
You work with your attorney to make the actual legal and planning decisions.

03 — Draft, Review + Sign
Your documents are prepared, legally reviewed, explained, and properly executed.

04 — Fund + Finish
We help make sure the plan is connected to your assets and does not simply sit in a binder unfinished.

A plan should feel like yours.

Not your parents’ plan.

Not a template for a family you do not have.

Not a pile of documents you barely understand.

Your life. Your people. Your animals. Your work. Your values. Your plan.
